Az 1333-as pápai tizedjegyzék Villa Georgii néven említi a falut. Az ősi templom alapja ma is látható, a falutól keletre állott, és ott volt maga a falu is. A tornyon szereplő dátum 1530 (1570?) újítást vagy új templom építését jelzi. A ma is meglévő katolikus templomot 1748 végén a katolikus hívek Haller Gáborné Károlyi Klára segítségével visszakapták, mivel a falu lakossága a reformáció idején a templommal együtt református lett. A reformátusoknak újat építettek. 1750-től a györgyfalvi templom újra plébánia volt. 1770-től létezett katolikus iskola Györgyfalván, amely többször szünetelt. 1919-ben Rónai Jenő újraindította, de 1938-ban ismét bezárták. Iskolaként utoljára 1940-től 1948-ig működött.
