He was born on 13 February 1946 in Sighetu Marmației. After attending high school in his hometown, he started his studies at the Faculty of Roman Catholic Theology in Alba Iulia (1963-1969). He was ordained as priest on 13 April 1969 by Venerable Áron Márton, Bishop of Transylvania. Between 1970 and 1974 he was a student of the Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum in Rome and obtained two Bachelor’s Degrees: in Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University (1970-1972) and in Biblical Studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (1972-1974). He obtained Doctoral Degree in Theology at the Pázmány Péter Catholic Univerity (1978).
Pope Saint John Paul II appointed him as the Titular Bishop of Aquae Regiae and the Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia on 14 March 1990. He was ordained as bishop on 29 April 1990 in the Franciscan Church of Șumuleu Ciuc. Ordaining bishops: Apostolic Nuncio Francesco Colasuonno and the retiring and newcomer bishops of Alba Iulia, Antal Jakab and Lajos Bálint. He was named as vicar general on 10 May 1990.
The Holy Father appointed him as the Apostolic Governor of Armenians in Romania on 19 July 1991. His investiture took place on 1st March 1992 in the Armenian Cathedral of Gherla. He was named as the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Alba Iulia on 8 April 1994, his investiture took place on 21 April 1994 in the Cathedral of Alba Iulia.
He was the Archbishop of Alba Iulia for nearly 26 years, his resignation was accepted by Pope Francis on 24 December 2019, appointing at the same time his successor.
His priestly and episcopal motto:
„Magnificat” i.e. „My soul magnifies the Lord.” (Luke 1:46)
His Excellency’s Coat of Arms is identical with the Archdiocesan Coat of Arms, because as the Auxiliary Bishop he did not have, and as the Archbishop he renewed the Archdiocesan Coat of Arms on the basis of the ancient seal of the Cathedral Chapter of Alba Iulia, representing Saint Michael, the patron saint of the Archdiocese.
