1332-ben plébániatemplommal rendelkezett, a pápai tizedjegyzék Nachtondnak írja a nevét.
A templomot a gótikus korban felújították, s a régi, román kori szentély helyett gótikus szentélyt építettek. A romlásnak indult templom javíttatását Dónáth, nyújtódi birtokos vállalta azzal a feltétellel, hogy reformátusok lesznek. Apor Lázár mentette meg a helyzetet, s vállalta a templom javíttatását. Apor Borbála pedig földbirtokot adományozott az egyháznak. Az 1802. évi földrengés után 1821-re kijavították a templomot. A szentély ekkor kapott boltívet és barokk motívumokat. Borsos Sebestyén szerint a reformáció előtt szerzetesek is voltak Nyújtódon.
1997-ben ravatalozóház épült a temetőben.
1771-től volt katolikus iskola 1948-ig.
