Első templomában a küküllői főesperességhez tartozó Hosszúaszón Péter nevű pap szolgált (1332). A reformáció idején a szászok lutheránusok lettek, a magyarok pedig reformátusok. A katolikus egyház a 18. században éledt újra a medgyesi ferenceseknek köszönhetően. Bajtay József Antal püspök gondoskodott a reformáció után újraszerveződő egyházról, és megépíttette a második templomot. 1882-ben a következő filiái voltak: Mikeszásza, Kiskerék, Csicsóholdvilág, Csonád, Sorostelj, Kisselyk, Lodromány. A harmadik templom a második templom helyén épült a Státus támogatásával.
1950-ig önálló plébánia volt a filiáival egyetemben. A 20. században az egyházközség nagy támogatója a Jósika bárói család volt.
