Az 1870-es években épülő vaskohóhoz többnyire német anyanyelvű katolikus lakók települtek. Piskitelepről látták el őket. 1902-ben felépítették a templomot a gyár támogatásával, 1910-től pedig a plébániát is. Első helybeli plébános Lakó János volt 1928-tól.
Sztrigyszentgyörgy neve 1377-ben Tengewerk, 1472-ben pedig Zenthgyergh formában szerepel. Neve a Szent György tiszteletére szentelt templomról tanúskodik. 12. századi érméket találtak egy fatemplom helyén, melynek utóda, a kőtemplom, a következő (13.) században épülhetett. Katolikus lakói a reformáció idején reformátusok lettek a templommal együtt. A hívek megfogyatkozása miatt a 20. század elején eladták
a görögkeletieknek. 1910-ben Sztrigyszentgyörgyre települtek bukovinai székelyek, akiknek templomot építettek 1935-ben Kisboldogasszony tiszteletére. Katolikus iskola is volt 1920-tól, amelyet azonban 1948-ban államosítottak.
