1299-ben Barbanth, Borbánd néven írják. 1302-ben már plébániatemploma van, amelyet a Szent Kereszt tiszteletére szenteltek. De már azelőtt is volt temploma, mivel a 12. században Rajnán túli, Brabantból származó népcsoport telepítette be a helységet. A templomot egykor kőkerítés vette körül, amelyből mára csak a kaputorony maradt fenn.
A hívek a reformációkor, 1564-ben reformátusok lesznek. 1715-től újra plébánia. 1834-ben az egész lakosság katolikus lesz. Különös, hogy románul tudó papot kérnek
Itt szolgált többek között Veszely Károly kiváló egyháztörténész, plébános (1881–96).
1920-tól római katolikus iskola is működik. Majd Léstyán József új iskolát építtet (1928–30).
Marosszentimrén is működött katolikus iskola, amelyet 1948-ban államosítottak. 13. századi templomát Hunyadi János javíttatja, amely ma a reformátusoké.
