A hagyomány szerint a falu a nevét egy ott lakó remetéről kapta. A reformáció idején lakói unitáriusok lettek. A falu lakóit 1746-ban Ágota János udvarhelyi pap térítette vissza. Ettől kezdve az udvarhelyi ferencesek látták el a hívek lelkigondozását. 1784-től plébánia rangra emelték. 1835-től helyben lakó papjai voltak 1984-ig, utolsó plébánosa Stürzel Manfréd volt. Ezután a székelyudvarhelyi Szent Miklós plébániáról, 1998-tól pedig a Kis Szent Teréz plébániáról látják el. 1917-ben mint filia hozzátartozott: Abásfalva, Gyepes, Homoródkeményfalva, Homoródszentmárton, Kénos és Lókod.
